Delhi Minorities Commission Chairman Charged With Sedition

Sedition charges have been made upon Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Zafarul Islam Khan. He was accused of making a “provocative” comment on social media early this week which had caused disharmony and created a rift in the society.“

Recently Arab has highlighted the rising islamophobic situation in India, to which Khan had thanked Kuwait “for standing with Indian Muslims”.

Recently in a Facebook post, he had said, “The Hindutva bigots calculated that given the huge economic stakes involved the Muslim and Arab world will not care about the persecution of Muslims in India”. He took the name of some Indian Muslims along with Zakir Naik, who has been red cornered by Interpol. Khan said that Zakir Naik is a respected household name in the Arab and Muslim world.

Khan had also reportedly commented that Indian Muslims have not been complaining about their situation to Arab and another Muslim world. All the lynching riots happening in India, which mainly targeted Indian Muslims. He added that the day they were pushed to try to that, Indian bigots will be facing an avalanche.

After a gathering of Muslims attending Tabligh Jamaat, infected cases got risen as they were affected by COVID-19 thus the right-wing forces had accused the community of spreading the virus across the country.

After posting a controversial statement Khan issued another statement on Facebook stating himself as a patriot who has always defended the country abroad.
He further said that along with patriotism he has always been vocal about the problems in the country.

He has accused some news channels of twisting his views.
According to news reports on May 2, an FIR was lodged and the Delhi Police special cell booked Khan under section 124A (sedition) and 153A.

Khan has told Hindustan Times that he has not seen the FIR and he will comment only when he sees it or know about it.

Meanwhile, reacting to the military action, a variety of prominent citizens have issued a public statement expressing solidarity with Khan and have urged the govt “to take strong action against those that are distorting” his Facebook post “and spreading vicious false propaganda against him”.
