FIR Against Journalists Sudhir Choudhary, Arnab Goswami, and Amish Devgan

Sudhir Chaudhary who is the Editor-in-Chief for the channel Zee News TV has been booked under non-bailable sections by the Kerala police. He conducted a program on Jihad on March 11 on his TV show Daily News And Analysis (DNA). An FIR was lodged against him in Kozhikode city of Kerala on May 7. As per the FIR, Sudhir’s program is hurting the Muslim religion.

After Sudhir was booked, Amish Devgan, an anchor of News18 TV channel and host of TV show ‘Aar Paar’, has also been booked by the Mumbai Police. He was accused of broadcasting false news purportedly on his show on May 1. According to the reports the anchor wrongly claimed that Muslims offered namaz in a mosque in Kurla area of Mumbai. He is also alleged to have shown a fake video during the show to prove his claim.

Last month, Arnab Goswami, Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief was booked at several places in the country after he had his controversial program related to Palghar mob lynching. He was interrogated for around 12 hours by the Mumbai police. He was lodged under another case for communalizing the Bandra railway station incident in which on April 14, a huge crowd had gathered after a rumour about the start of train services spread.

In the last few years, members of civil society have been strongly criticizing several TV anchors, including the three mentioned above, for their controversial TV programs and provocative language.

Prashant Bhushan who is the lawyer in the Senior Supreme Court lawyer had tweeted his reaction on the police cases against TV anchors for controversial programs.

He tweeted that all these godi media anchors who have broadcasted so much hate by fake news must be brought to account. His tweet further said that if the godi media anchors were prosecuted for even committing half of the offenses, they would spend the rest of their lives in jail.

But senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain termed the case against Sudhir Chaudhary as an “attack on press freedom.”

“The case by Kerala Govt against senior journalist @sudhirchaudhary is an attack on Press Freedom & is aimed at silencing the Media. What is the Communist Party afraid of? The Truth??,” Hussain asked in a tweet.
