Indian Army Bans 89 Apps, Including Facebook And Instagram

The Indian Army recently directed all personnel to eliminate 89 apps from their mobile phones by July 15.

The 1.3 million Indian Army order includes removal of apps like Facebook and Instagram.

To prevent the leakage of sensitive information this order was passed. Additionally, due to security considerations the Indian Army passed this order, said an Army source on Thursday.

The to be removed apps also include 59 Chinese apps earlier announced by the Government.

The Indian Government banned 59 mobile apps amid the ongoing border tensions between India and China. The Indian government termed the banning of Chinese apps as prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity, defence of the country.

However, the Army has issued many orders earlier as well for limiting the use of Facebook. It had also asked personnel to limit the Whatsapp usage for their official work. Moreover, the current passed order is wider than earlier ones. This order covers the removal of apps related to messaging, content sharing, web browsers, video hosting, gaming, e-commerce, dating, anti-virus, news and music among others.

There have been several cases of personnel being virtually honey-trapped on social media platforms, leading to the sharing of sensitive information.

Responding to the Army ban, Truecaller said in a statement that it was disappointing and saddening to learn that Truecaller was among the list of 89 apps being banned by the Indian armed forces for their personnel. It called the inclusion in the list as “unfair and unjust.”

“We would like to reiterate that Truecaller remains safe to use, both for our citizens and for our esteemed armed forces personnel. We see no reason for Truecaller to be on this list and will investigate the matter further,” a Truecaller spokesperson said. Truecaller provided a vital service to over 170 million people in India, identifying and blocking hundreds of millions of spam calls and SMS every single day, the spokesperson added.
