Indian Government Bans 59 Chinese Apps Amid Border Tensions

The Indian Government banned 59 mobile apps amid the ongoing border tensions between India and China. The Indian government termed the banning of Chinese apps as prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity, defence of the country.

According to the official statement of the IT Ministry, many complaints have been received by them from various sources. Complaints also reported misusage of some mobile apps that are available on Android and iOS platforms. These apps are accused of “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India.

“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” the statement said.

Banned mobile apps include Tik Tok, UC Browser. File sharing apps like Shareit, WeChat is also under banned list.

An exhaustive recommendation has also been provided by the Indian Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to Ministry of Home Affairs, for blocking these malicious apps.

“On the basis of these and upon receiving of recent credible inputs that such Apps pose threat to sovereignty and integrity of India, the Government of India has decided to disallow the usage of certain Apps, used in both mobile and non-mobile Internet enabled devices,” it said.

The statement further added that banning Chinese apps will protect data of Indian users. 

The clash in Galwan Valley in Ladakh had sparked a debate on the boycott of Chinese products and the apps. Moreover, at a few places, people held protests demanding the Government for banning the Chinese import goods.

Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister had called this ban and said that banning of Tik Tok will affect the economy of China. He claimed that Tik Tok is used by 15 crore Indians. 

In his tweet, he said that China gets profit due to Tik Tok in crores from India. He further requested humbly from Indian users to stop using Tik Tok.
