Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, the president of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust tested positive for the coronavirus. He was one of the 5 persons who shared the stage for the Bhoomi Pujan for Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Mahant Das also shared the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, UP governor Anandiben Patel and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
However, it is not yet known the time at which Das contracted the virus. According to the photos tweeted by ANI, Das was seen standing in between Modi and Adityanath, without wearing any mask. As per the visuals he came in close contact with the PM Narendra Modi.
As per reports, Das will be shifted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon for good treatment. Mathura district magistrate Ram Mishra said that Das was not having any fever but he was experiencing shortness of breathiness.
He will be joining Amit Shah, who tested positive for COVID-19 3 days before the Bhoomi Pujan. Amit Shah is also being treated at Medanta Hospital.
In the lead up to the event, the priest who was going to perform the ceremony and 16 policemen monitoring the site tested positive for the viral infection, prompting calls for the event to be postponed.
Earlier, Das was chief of the Ram Janmbhoomi Nyas. It is the trust of Vishwa Hindu Parishad to promote the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. He was charged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the demolition of Babri Masjid.
On the direction of the Supreme Court, the Centre in February this year constituted the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust but left the posts of president and general secretary vacant. This was to allow the autonomous body to elect Das and VHP leader Champat Rai to these positions.
