Ramdev and Patanjali have been accused of misleading people for falsely claiming to develop COVID-19 vaccine. In Bihar Court, a criminal complaint has been filed against them.
The Wire reported that the FIR put Ramdev and Patanjali under charges of cheating, criminal conspiracies, and other charges.
The complaint filed by Tamanna Hashmi, who identifies himself as a social worker, The Wire reported further.
The complainant has named Ramdev, the convenor of the Patanjali Research Institute, and his aide Balkrishna, the organisation’s chairman, as accused.
Mr Hashmi submitted that Ramdev and Balkrishna claimed to have prepared “Coronil tablet” to cure COVID-19, which is nothing but misleading.
The Ayush Ministry has asked Patanjali Ayurved for stopping any further advertising and claiming of their medicine.
Mr Hashmi said that the Ayush Ministry did not get any composition details of the ayurvedic medicine, reported The Wire.
The complainant has sought registration of a case under IPC sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty inducing delivery of property), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), among others.
Patanjali Ayurved, the Ramdev’s herbal medicine company recently launched ‘Coronil tablet and Swasari Vati’ medicines. They claim that these medicines can completely cure COVID-19 patients within seven days.
Further, Patanjali claimed that their medicine showed 100 per cent positive results in clinical trials. However, they said that their test result was not for patients on a life support system.
However, the AYUSH Ministry denied knowing any facts of claims and details of the study done by Patanjali.
It has sought from the company a detailed report on composition, testing and other data of the drugs.
The Ministry also used powers under a 1954 law to ask the firm to “stop advertising/publicising” claims of corona cure drug until the issue is examined by it.
Moreover, a notification put by the Government has banned the advertising of products by the companies without any government’s approval.
But it wasn’t immediately clear if the drug can still be sold. Ramdev said the medicines have been developed by Patanjali Research Center, Haridwar, and privately-owned National Institute of Medical Science, Jaipur, following all protocols with clinically controlled trial-based evidence, The Wire reported. Patanjali group has an estimated turnover of around ₹10,500 crores.
