Sharjeel Usmani Arrested For Anti-CAA Protest, Ex-AMU Student Leader

Ex-AMU student leader, Sharjeel Usmani got arrested by the police for his role in the Anti-CAA protests. He was picked up by the UP’s anti-terrorist squad from his uncle’s house in Azamgarh. Later he was presented in the court which remanded him in judicial custody.

According to the police, as reported by the media, Sharjeel has been boarded in a temporary jail at Lodha which is around 20km from Azamgarh.

Civil Lines Circle officer Anil Samania said police wanted Sharjeel in four different cases including the violence which broke out at AMU on December 15.

Anil Samania further added that police charged Sharjeel under sections 147, 148, 149, 153, and 153A of the IPC.

Apart from these charges he has also been charged for attempt to murder, assaulting public services, making criminal intimidation, disobedience to public servants’ order, inflicting grievous injuries as well as under section 67 of the IT Act.

Aligarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police Muniraj G said that Sharjeel was charged under the IT Act as he tried to spread communal discord on December 6. Sharjeel, last year posted a controversial picture of the ex-deputy PM concerning the Babri mosque demolition.

Police accused Sharjeel to be in touch with other Anti-CAA protestors including Sharjeel Imam, currently in jail.

Sharjeel’s father told reporters on Friday as reported by IndiaToday that for more than 24 hours “we were not provided with any information regarding his whereabouts. We have approached the Human Rights Commission for what has transpired “.

The manner of Sharjeel’s arrest is deeply condemned by the AMU Students Collective. AMU Students Collective is a human rights group based in the campus. They have demanded the release of Sharjeel Imam.
However, the AMU authorities are no longer involved in the matter.

IndiaToday reported that when contacted AMU spokesman, Professor Shafay Kidwai told PTI, “Sharjeel Usmani is no longer our student and we were not informed about the arrest.”
The AMUTA, AMU Teachers Association also distanced themselves from the issue.
