A letter written by a group of party leaders to Congress President Sonia Gandhi got the response to find a new chief as she does not want to carry out responsibilities further. Some people familiar with the development have said the above statement as reported by the Hindustan Times.
In response to the letter, the Congress President told them that to lead the party once again, disinterests her. On August 10, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) requested Sonia Gandhi to assume the reins of the organisation again, a senior functionary said on condition of anonymity, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

On May 25, Rahul Gandhi put forward his resignation from the party. The leaders made desperate pleas to Sonia Gandhi after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation in the wake of the party’s rout in the national elections.
During that time, Sonia Gandhi did mention in her response that she had already requested that the fresh president should be someone other than from the Gandhi family, from the letter the functionary quoted.
In a meeting on May 25, Rahul Gandhi while resigning from the provided top post, told the CWC that the party should make a President who is from outside the Gandhi family.
HT has learnt, as reported by them that the letter has been in the works for at least the past month. Several leaders that HT spoke to confirmed that Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal, both Rajya Sabha MPs have taken the main initiative in drafting the letter.
