Donald Trump, who is the President, of the US, threatened the World Health Organization (WHO) to halt fundings permanently, if, the WHO did not commit to improvements in 30 days. Trump would also reconsider the United States membership in this global health body if the condition is not met.
On Monday, Trump wrote a letter to WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus that read, “If WHO doesn’t commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of US funding to WHO permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization.”
Trump had temporarily suspended the US’ contribution to the WHO last month, accusing it of promoting China’s “disinformation” about the coronavirus outbreak. However, WHO officials denied the accusation. Beijing also said that it was open and transparent.
Trump said in, the letter, that the WHO got only one way to move ahead and that is if the WHO can show that, it is independent, of China. He further wrote in the letter that, his administration had already initiated a discussion, with WHO’s director regarding the ways to reform the organization but, urgent action is required.
He further added, that he could not allow organizations to be financed by the American taxpayer dollars, when clearly in the present state those organizations are not working in America’s interests.
On Monday, the WHO said that an independent review of the global coronavirus response would begin at the earliest and it received backing from China, where the virus was first discovered.
Previously, when Trump said, for suspension of fundings to WHO, Bill Gates reacted against it. Co-founder of Microsoft, and Melinda, his wife spoke in support, for the WHO, in separate Twitter posts, a day after Trump announced that, he is halting funds from the U.S. to WHO. Gates, in his tweet, said that the funds halting for the WHO, when the world is facing a huge crisis, is very dangerous. The work done by WHO, their ideas are helping in the curb of the spreading of coronavirus, and if they are stopped then, no organization can take their place.
