USCIRF: “List India As Country Of Particular Concern”

On Tuesday, the United States federal commission urged Trump’s administration in Washington DC to name India as a “country of particular concern” because of its downfall in providing religious freedom.

Further, it recommended imposing “targeted sanctions” on officials and agencies of the Government of India, who are responsible for extreme violations of religious freedom, by arresting their assets and blocking them from entering into the United States.

The USCIRF tweeted quoting its vice-chair that Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India had exposed millions of Muslims to detention, deportation, and statelessness when the government completes its planned nationwide National Register of Citizens.

The government of India responded to the USCIRF saying that the commission itself is of particular concern.

Anurag Srivastava, the spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs, stated a sentence, denying the accusations made by USCIRF on India, claiming USCIRF’s views towards India as biased. Further, he said that the organization itself is of particular concern and will be treated accordingly.

On Tuesday USCIRF released its annual report 2020, which accused the majority ruling party of India- Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for introducing policies that violate the freedom of religion, especially for Muslims.

The USCIRF posted on Twitter quoting its Vice-Chair Nadine Maenza, “Perhaps the steepest, and most alarming, deterioration in religious freedom conditions was in #India, the largest democracy in the world.”

USCIRF: "List India As Country Of Particular Concern"

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has been publicly criticized by USCIRF many times in its annual report, but this is the first time it has asked to designate the country, as a particular concern.

Myanmar, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan are nine other countries tagged under countries of particular concern. However, these nine countries have already been stated as so.

Including India, there are four other countries in which the commission has asked to be tagged under “country of particular concern.” The other four countries are Syria, Russia, Vietnam, and Nigeria.

In the annual report, the panel has mentioned about NPR, including CAA as well. North-East Delhi riots have also been mentioned in the report along with the remark Amit Shah made for migrants calling them as termites.
