Recently on Saturday near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, Twenty-five migrant workers were killed in a road accident. Several were injured when a trailer truck they were traveling in rammed into a supply lorry, according to police officials.
The larger trailer truck was coming from Rajasthan and was loaded with bags of supply material. The police said that the supply truck was going from Delhi to Madhya Pradesh and had halted near a Dhaba where the trailer, which supposedly carried over 50 persons, bumped into it from behind. The police further said that both vehicles were overturned Uttar Pradesh.
District Magistrate (DM) of Auraiya Abhishek Singh said the incident took place at 3:30 a.m, He added that the big truck’s drive must have fallen asleep.
A woman who was injured told that their vehicle was stopped so that they could have their refreshments.
Of the dead, 12 were from Jharkhand, four from West Bengal (4) and two belonged from Bihar and U.P. Several of the injured belonged to Madhya Pradesh. 15 were gravely injured and were sent to Saifai Medical College.
Two stations in charge officers under whose jurisdiction the accident took place have been suspended.
Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has commanded the police to charge cases against the vehicle’s owners and to seize the vehicles. He requested the migrant workers not to risk their lives by walking back home or boarding illegal and unsafe means of transportation.
Additional Chief Secretary Home, Awanish Awasthi, later declared an order telling buses returning empty after delivering migrants to their home to pick up those walking on the highways and drop them near close to their districts on highways.
Condolences to the families of the deceased have been expressed by Mr. Adityanath.
An immediate clarification had been sought from Additional SP and SSP Mathura, and SSP and Additional SP Agra, along with ADG Agra and IG Agra, said a government spokesperson. Agra and Mathura have borders with Rajasthan.
Akhilesh Yadav, president of Samajwadi Party has announced that his party would provide a compensation of ₹1 lakh each to the kin of those killed.
